What is paleo?

Paleo was originally theorised by Dr Loren Cordain.  The concept is to eat as our palaeolithic ancestors did.  There was no farming at all 10,000 years ago, it was basically a hunter gatherer community. If you could find it and either gather or catch it, you ate it.

Everything was full of natural nutrients, there was no use of fertilisers or harmful pesticides. There was no genetic modification or even selective breeding and above all you knew exactly what was in your food! If you look at the research by Eton Konner and Shostack, the levels of chronic disease other than trauma induced arthritis was significantly less than it is today and people’s quality of lives were far better than those of people today.

Think about it this way.  Are we living longer today than say 1000 years ago? Yes, average ages have been going up, Near as damn it, year on year, every year for as long as I can remember, however, are people as healthy as they were and living the quality of life they were living that long ago?  Now as someone who works in the healthcare industry I would definitely say a categoric no!

Over the 14 years I have been in clinical practice I have seen more and more people relying on medications just to go from one day to the next. The numbers of people taking statins and diabetes medication has gone through the roof.  More and more people suffering from depression and the numbers of not only clients but friends and family members being diagnosed with cancer is out of all proportion.

I am clearly not the only person that has noticed this.  Look over Facebook, the Internet and just see the research that is slowly surfacing and being summarily squashed or mercilessly criticised because it is not mainstream acceptable healthcare.  The thing to note is that who bank rolls the healthcare industry? Basically it’s the drug companies.  They have their fingers in all sorts of pies and are spectacularly powerful.

Read up about the side effects of both paracetamol and ibuprofen, the two most commonly purchased over the counter pain suppressant you can buy, and explain to me how in a society where healthcare costs have gone through the roof, medical mismanagement and misappropriate use/prescription of drugs is now the 3rd and nearly the 2nd highest killer in the western world!
